BRITANNICUS East Coast Premiere @ Theater for the New City
Happy (almost/kinda/sorta) spring!!! While waiting patiently for sunnier skies to frolic under, I've been keeping myself busy indoors with rehearsals for the East Coast premiere of Howard Rubenstein's translation of Jean Racine's classic BRITANNICUS. Set in ancient Rome, the play tracks the beginning of Emperor Nero's descent into moral depravity, as his sudden lust for his disinherited stepbrother Britannicus' fiancé (Junia) leads him to corruption, violence and ruthless power struggles involving his ambitious mother (Agrippina), his scheming political adviser (Narcissus), and righteous military adviser (Burrus).
In the words of our promotional postcard, it's got all those classical drama goodies i.e. "INTRIGUE! CORRUPTION! LIES! TRUMPERY!". Cast and Production deets below.
Who would have guessed that my NYC stage debut would be in a classical tragedy? (Here's looking at you Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.) Rehearsal photos of me as Junia below!
